Plant Therapy for Burnout: How a 69-Cent Succulent Changed My Life

Five years ago, I stood in the harsh fluorescent glare of a suburban grocery store, tears streaming down my face as I stared at dying roses wrapped in plastic. Those wilting flowers under artificial light were a mirror I couldn’t look away from—cut from their roots, slowly fading in an environment that could never sustain them. In that moment, between the breakfast cereals and the clearance rack, I saw myself: a corporate consultant creating PowerPoints about “organic growth” while feeling completely severed from anything actually growing.

That breakdown in aisle seven became my breakthrough. And it started with a sixty-nine cent succulent that everyone said was already dead.

The Miracle of the Clearance Plant

I carried that shriveled, brown succulent back to my corporate desk like it was precious cargo. My colleagues thought I’d lost it—who tries to save a plant that’s clearly beyond hope? But something in me recognized something in that plant. We were both waiting for the right conditions to come back to life.

Every morning, I’d water it with lukewarm water from the office kitchen. I’d turn it toward the weak light filtering through tinted windows. I’d whisper to it during particularly brutal meetings. And slowly, impossibly, new growth appeared. Tiny green shoots pushing through the brown. Life insisting on itself despite everything.

That clearance succulent taught me my first lesson in everyday miracles: Growth doesn’t need perfect conditions. It just needs patience, presence, and a little faith in what’s possible.
